The kitchen smelled the way all important places smell like something that has been loved for a very long time.
Alma was pulping the coffee cherries by hand. Slow. Deliberate. Practiced. The beans came free one by one. And from the cherries from that luminous, honey-like layer clinging between the bean and the fruit came something that made Ahyssa stop walking.
A liquid. Golden. Almost glowing.
What do you do with it? Ahyssa asked.
Alma paused. And in that pause was an entire education. We wash it away, she said simply. We always have.
Ahyssa watched the golden drip hit the drain. Then she reached under the counter, found an empty glass jar, and held it under the stream.
She caught it. Before she could talk herself out of it. Before she had a plan or a name or a reason. She just caught it and in catching it, started everything.
